HERE IS MY STORY
Dr Luria Leslie FOUNOU
Scientific Leader, Certified Life Coach, and Founder of D2Africa.
Back in 2018, after completing my PhD in Pharmaceutical Microbiology and working in various research roles, I realized a significant gap in the support available for scientists seeking grant funding to perform high-quality research, especially in resource-limited settings.
From 2018 to March 2020, to keep my research going, I relentlessly applied to countless grant calls, facing astonishing rejections. I reached the shortlisting stages for some but all had the same outcome: NO.
It didn't take long to realize that this process was misaligned with my ultimate vision and that my mental health could be affected in the long term.
I then realized I needed to change something, but I was not sure how or what in order to secure the first project that would open me to the doors of the life and career I dreamed of.
I eventually found two mentors in June 2020 who helped me believe in myself, explained grant funding principles, grant winning strategies and what I had to improve to win.
Less than six months later in December 2020, I secured my first small grant, the Cambridge Africa Alborada,later, guided by mentors.
It was a breakthrough moment, I struggled for two years with no progress, but within six months of support, I had the outcome I needed. I then realized that sometimes there is only one piece that we miss and which could make a huge difference.
I decided to dive deeper into grant writing and winning strategies. I realized that to attract and secure substantial funding effectively, I needed a more strategic approach. I began by mapping out my funding funnel, clarifying each step from identifying potential grants to successful submission. I started to explore different funding channels and strategies.
Now guided by more than 10 advanced senior researchers each bringing his/her own wealth of expertise and knowledge, I learnt advanced proposal writing skills, funder requirements, and strategic networking. And I learned a valuable lesson: not having a solid system and support to secure regular funding is a huge mistake that many early-career researchers make, and that does not allow them to build the research career and impact they are dreaming of.
Today, I've secured numerous international competitive fellowships valued over €500K as principal investigator, directly impacting 1000 mothers and babies in Cameroon. I've also contributed to five international projects valued at over €1M, served as an expert for the WHO Foodborne Disease Epidemiology Reference Group, and reviewer for international funding organizations like MRC and FWO.
I know firsthand how challenging a scientific career can be and understand the frustration you're feeling.
